Associate Professor / Musicologist
Maia Sigua defended her doctoral thesis at Tbilisi State Conservatoire in 2014. The following year she was promoted to associate professor at the Conservatoire and has been an associate professor since 2021. Her research interests include 20th century music, musical theatre, ancient Greek tragedy in contemporary opera, Georgian art music, and musical iconography. More recently: opera and politics, repertoire politics, and issues of reception in totalitarian regimes.
Her scholarly articles have been published in the UK, USA and Georgia; periodically writes for various journals and blogs, contributes to TV and radio shows, has appeared in ARTE documentaries, etc. Dr. Sigua has given public lectures in Georgia, Germany, Poland and the USA, and has prepared program books and booklets for the Tbilisi State Opera.
In 2018 she won a joint DAAD-Rustaveli fellowship programme, in which she conducted postdoctoral research on H.W. Henze’s operas on ancient Greek tragedies at Goethe University, Frankfurt. The following year she was invited as a lecturer at the same university to give a seminar on “Understanding and Interpreting Georgian Music”.
